Creative Scientist, Inc. is a cell biology company offering a complete suite of services based on primary and immortalized cell culture models. We specialize in bioassay development, primary cell production, and pre-clinical contract research service. Our research contracts involve the full array of experimental cell biology techniques including the development of specialized cell lines and biomarkers.

Our core areas of expertise are

Bioassay development using primary cells derived from renewable tissues, isolation and genetic modification of human and animal progenitor cells, and production and testing of cell culture reagents essential for cell-based assay development and sustainable tissue engineering.

Our key cell model

We produce highly proliferative endothelial progenitor cell cultures, which are > 90% viable after long-term preservation and capable to form functional tissues.

Endothelial progenitor cells or endothelial colony-foming cells (ECFCs) can be isolated from small volumes of blood, are highly proliferative in culture, and can be cryopreserved for years without loss of viability. Therefore, ECFCs are very attractive as a model for both population studies and assesment of individual predisposition to drugs and toxicants.

ECFCs are amendable for the generation of induced pluripotent cells (iPSs) and other custom-specific genetic modifications.

Our flagship services are

The unique intracellular signal transduction pathway profiling (ISP) in primary cells (ISP profiling provides an unprecedented insight into the mechanism of drug or any other stimulus action, thus, serving as a solid base for biomarker development).

The production of custom cell-based models including both reporter and knock-out cell lines (we employ a wide spectrum of cell-modifying vectors, including viruses. Using either modified or unmodified cells, we develop bioassays enabling efficient analysis of particular genes, cell type-specific responses, and drug-mediated effects. These specialized expertise is routinely complemented by standard bioassays, such as cell viability and drug cytotoxicity).

Our products in development

We develop an endothelial progenitor cell proliferation kit which includes cells and growth media optimized for endothelial progenitor cell growth.

Our project in development

Creative Scientist, Inc. is developing a radiation sensitivity test (patent-pending) based on a discovery made by our staff in collaboration with Duke University researchers. We found that donor-specific endothelial colony forming cells are very sensitive to ionizing radiation and undergo long-term quantifiable changes that can be exploited for biomaker development (Kinev at al., 2013).

ECFCs can be isolated from small volumes of blood, are highly proliferative in culture, and can be cryopreserved for years without loss of viability. Therefore, ECFCs are very attractive as a model for individual radiation sensitivity testing, human population studies, and analysis of candidate radioprotectors.

Dr. Alexander Kinev is the founder and Chief Executive Officer of the Creative Scientist, Inc. Dr. Kinev is an experimental cell biologist whose expertise is grounded in more then twenty years of laboratory research. Before starting Creative Scientist, Dr. Kinev worked at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and, before that, at the Wistar Institute, Philadelphia, PA. Dr. Kinev has graduated from the Institute of Cytology of Russian Academy of Sciences and did his undergraduate studies in Saint Petersburg State University, Russia. He currently lives and works in Durham, NC.
